Artist of the Month - November

The Saginaw Charter Township Art In Public Places is proud to present Alan Maciag of Midland, Michigan, for the month of November.

Alan Maciag
ARTIST
Michigan Artist, Alan Maciag (B.1950), is a 1974 Graduate of Central Michigan University with a Masters Degree in Art Education. He has retired after teaching art for the last thirty-two (32) years in the Frankenmuth School District.

Alan’s avid interest in architecture and gardening are reoccurring themes in his current body of work.

It is the pure beauty of nature at its finest hour that inspires Alan’s oil paintings. Alan is especially moved by sunlight and the magic a ray of light can cast upon a particular subject revealing the depth and fundamental form waiting to be captured on canvas…from a field of poppies to and ida red apple.

Alan’s rural landscapes are a balance between form, distance, colour, and content. This balance creates a sense of calm and bucolic reverence for the rural heritage of Michigan, for the wonderland of her vacation lakes or for the sanctuary within a garden or public space. It is as though you have been
given a gift; to simply “step in” for a moment and be surrounded by the spirit captured on that canvas.

Alan also has an ability to capture the energy of city life. His paint strokes capture the hustle and bustle of humanity, simplifying them to a palatable content. Alan literally draws out the quintessential elements that are the breath of life in his subjects and definition of statements. You will “feel” the city as you gaze upon his city views.

Ever evolving, Alan’s work is growing as the artist grows influenced by the beauty surrounding him as seen through his eyes.

STATEMENT
Plein air painters paint from life with a passion like no other in the world of painters. As an “open air” painter, I channel all my sensory faculties to absorb the truth in sight complemented by the atmosphere around me. By placing myself among these magnificent gifts of light and nature, my visions are propelled from my head to my hand to my canvas. First known as Realist in the 19th century
revolutionary painters such as Manet, Monet, Degas, and Renoir collectively gave birth to Impressionism. These Impressionistic masters, as I, embrace the philosophy that I must trust my eyes by physically registering the color of light. This is the basis of Plein air painting…to see nature not as form, but rather light on form. This then is my unique personal “philosophy” of light on form. I use no
formulas for painting but have learned to trust my own vision to find truth before me.

Alan’s art exhibit will be shown at the Saginaw Charter Township Hall, 4980 Shattuck Road, Saginaw, Michigan, during business hours Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 p.m., November 1 through November 30, 2017. The Offices are closed for Thanksgiving, November 23 & 24, all day.
