ARTIST STATEMENT

Karen Gerhardt has been an artist since before the age of 5. She was lucky to have parents and teachers early on who encouraged her to be creative! She would often get her school work done early and her first grade teacher allowed her to access classroom art supplies to draw and paint to her heart's desire! At the end of the school year the teacher held a one-person show with her work! Later on, in fourth grade, the teacher let her lead a few of the classrooms in some art projects throughout the year! While Karen was interested in many things in school - teaching, music, journalism, math and science -- she always went back to her love of art. After considering a degree in Engineering at Michigan Technological University, Karen decided to study graphic design and art.

Karen has been a graphic designer and illustrator for over 25 years. This work helped her express her creativity in a number of ways that has also helped area businesses and organization promote their services or communicate about a cause. She loves to create pieces by hand with traditional materials, but also enjoys creating digital art on a computer. Karen is looking forward to the time when she can draw, paint or sculpt just about every day.

Karen’s art exhibit will be shown at the Saginaw Charter Township Hall, 4980 Shattuck Road, Saginaw, Michigan, during business hours Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 p.m., June 1 through June 30, 2016.
